das gemälde befindet sich in einem englischen garten am broadway in den cotswolds , wo john singer sargent den sommer von verbrachte 1885 . Sargent wollte das genaue lichtniveau in der dämmerung erfassen, also malte er das bild im freien , auf impressionistische weise . Jeden tag in einer zeit im sommer und herbst malte er in den wenigen minuten, in denen das licht perfekt war . im folgenden sommer nahm er die malerei wieder auf und beendete sie schließlich ende oktober 1886 . die mädchen sind dolly und polly barnard . ihr vater war der illustrator frederick barnard - ein freund von Sargent's . Der titel stammt aus dem refrain eines populären liedes " ihr hirten sagt es mir " von joseph mazzinghi .
